Leading unto Light
To give you a flavor of how some of our guys are not growing up at all, I am quoting one of my recent conversations with a friend on conditions of anonymity.
Me: So, you are moving to Parsipanny, uh? SUS (Subject Under Scrutiny): No, I have finalized the Roseland apartment. Me: But you liked the Parsipanny one better… SUS: Yes, I did. Me: And it is closer to work than the one at Roseland. SUS: Yes, it is. Me: You got all your friends at Parsipanny. SUS: ughhhhhh… Me: And the white folks in Roseland community would hate you if they know you. SUS: Errrrr… Me: So, what the hell? SUS: My father insisted that I should take an east facing apartment Me: Well, for a $750 rent, sun is not going to shine into the apartment anyway. SUS: Hey, they are parents and have to be listened. After all we have lived so many years listening to them… |
On a moonless night, if you are visiting an unknown town that is deprived of lighting, even a blind man can be of great help. Having roamed around the town in complete darkness all through his life, he can tell you how far the coffee house is and what to listen for when you reach there. But once the dawn breaks, you should bid him adieu, however kind and courteous he might have been, and start using the faculties of your own or get the help of someone who can see. As much as we should be grateful to the blind man for his help at times of darkness, we should not be clinging on to his guidance once the sun is out.
Our SUS, quoted above, seriously lacks the confidence of seeing things through his own eyes or the wisdom of seeking guidance from the people who can see well. Letting his parents, who have never ventured out of south India, to run his affairs in the U.S is an assault on adulthood and an insult on the engineering degree he posses.
